BCH transformative approach in disseminating information on crops
In Bugesera District, Eastern Province a two day training on (Rwanda third National BCH III), was concluded on 23rd September 2022.
Biosafety Clearing- House is a United Nations Project responsible for environment, whose obligations include supporting countries in regard to dissemination of information pertaining to the consequences of biotechnology. This is in line with the Cartagena Convention, which helps countries with regard to the transportation in the context of applying the above mentioned technology which transformed the nature of crops, because of genetic modification.
The participants included experts in the field of technology and other people who had come from different organizations like Rwanda Environment Authority (REMA), Food and Drug Authority (FDA), Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB), Rwanda Institute for Conservation and Agriculture (RICA), University of Rwanda (UR), Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and World Food Program –Rwanda (WFP).
Niyonteze Gyclin who is an employee of Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB) in the department of research on diseases which affect crops, he pointed out that he had gained a lot in regard to the work he is assigned, because what he had learnt, was last experienced when he was still at school.
He said he profited knowledge which is in line with his profession, and the value he attributes to it mainly about the modification of crops, as well as countering whatever transforms crops. He said, “It might render to the increment of the yield without necessarily deforming it.”
One of the conclusion remarks from the training included mobilization so as to enable people know more about it, be it students, the Private Sector as well as journalists in order to know about the advantages attributed to it.
Rwanda hasn’t yet embraced the application of crops modification, however, its signatory.
Chantal Andrianarivo from Madagascar and happens to be an advisor to the United Nations Africa region and she was among the trainers, in conjunction with Charles from Ivory Coast who participated virtually.
Rutayisire Amandin who represented Rwanda Environment and Management Authority (REMA), and an expert in Bio safety, in his conclusion remark lauded the participants and argued them to put what they had learnt in practice.
BC Project supports all countries as per the dissemination of information about crops whose genetic makeup was transformed in people and even in animals.
